چکیده

Pseudopataecus carnatobarbatus, new species, is described from 12 specimens collected on shallow coastal reefs of northern Western Australia, between the Monte Bello Islands and Adele Island. It is distinguished from its sole congener, P. taenianotus Johnson 2004, by branched (versus simple) tips to most fin rays, last soft dorsal-fin ray joined by membrane more fully to upper caudal-fin ray, spinous dorsal fin more distinctly notched, pelvic fins more robust, anterior face of lower lip smooth (versus profusely covered with cirri), and a narrow quadrangular pit on the forehead, bounded by frontal, supraorbital, ocular and preocular ridges (versus pit and preocular ridge absent). It also has modally fewer anal-fin rays and modally greater numbers of gill rakers. Pseudopataecus carnatobarbatus is found in an extremely high tidal range area of Australia, where movement of up to 11 m occurs during spring tides. Specimens were collected in rocky tide pools with coral rubble and thick stands of brown macroalgae, especially Padina species. The new species has been found in intertidal areas up to only 13 m deep, whereas P. taenianotus has been collected by trawling soft bottom habitats in depths of 20 to 63 m.

A diminutive new species of Cyrtodactylus is described from East Montalivet Island off the north coast of the Kimberley region of Western Australia. Cyrtodactylus kimberleyensis sp. nov. may be distinguished from all other congeners by its small size (gravid female holotype 45 mm SVL), its lack of enlarged subcaudal plates, 16–18 rows of dorsal tubercles, weakly developed ventrolateral skin fol...

Platycephalus orbitalis, a new species of flathead (Teleostei: Platycephalidae) collected from western Australia

A new plataycephalid, Platycephalus orbitalis, is described on the basis of specimens collected in the Indian Ocean off the coast of Western Australia at depths of 50–144 m. The new species had been mistakenly identified as P. marmoratus, which is now known to be restricted to eastern Australia. Several morphological characters (e.g, 65–68 pored scales in lateral line, snout and interorbit nake...

Recent assessments of watercraft in rock-art assemblages have been undertaken for areas of Arnhem Land in the NT (inc...

—Matsubarichthys inusitatus is described from a single specimen, taken from One Tree Island, Queensland, Australia. It is readily distinguished from other scorpaenoids by its unique dorsal-fin formula (II, IV, 6) and vertebral formula (9 + 12 = 21), both with fewer elements than previously reported for a scorpaenoid; a low anal fin-ray count (11,4); a pelvic fin-ray count of 1,1; and the gill o...

Abstract The morphological identification and investigation of the internal skeletal structure of sea cucumbers in the tidal zone of the western coast of the Persian Gulf were performed by sampling from 2 stations (Bostaneh Port and Hendurabi Island). Species identification were performed using the Spicules detected form muscle tissue of the samples by Invert microscope and checked with valid ...
